Subject title: Another attempt at coloring

Hi guys, this is the new piece I was working on. I did the painting, but the design/ink is from a friend of mine.

Do you think blurring the background was a bad idea?
There was a lot of crosshatching happening there.

Critiques are highly appreciated!

I know personally, I'm a little hesitant about critiquing comic style coloring. I could give my two cents on the lighting, colors, rendering, but I'm not sure if there are special rules for comics.

I'll be glad to hear.

The only kind of "rules" are that I cannot get rid of the linework or pitch black areas, and I need to "respect" the drawing.

Every thing feels very seperate.

Im curious as to what it would look like if you make the smoke coming from the cauldron look like the smoke coming from the eyes.
And some areas, like the cloak, and previously mentioned smoke, have way to much detail, especially compared to other things.

I'll do an alternate version trying those things.

I couldn't change much of the underlying drawing in this one, as it is from another artist, and I'm doing this for him.
Blurring the background(lots of crosshatching happening there) was maybe too much already.

OK, I'll take a stab at it. Here are two very quick overpaints. Sorry for destroying some of the line art and texture, but I'm assuming you have that on a separate layer. First, I think the drawing, and the coloring, overall, are both good.

I think the main problem, though, is a lack of unity in the lighting. It seems that the bubbling cauldron is the main light source, but it is unclear what color the light coming from inside is and how that is affecting the scene. In some parts, I see a lime green specular highlight, in others, yellow, so I tried both.

First, the light will be effecting the colors of everything it is illuminating. So in other words, the yellow cape will be shifted toward green under green light, and will be very yellow under yellow light. Things like the pink underside of the tentacles will likely be a shade of grey. Done right, they will appear pink in the context of the painting. Then on top of that shift, anything shiny, the tentacles, maybe the skin, the chain, will receive a specular highlight the exact color of the light source. Also, it looks like you put some green light over the books in the background, those will actually not catch any of the green/ yellow light if they are truly in shadow.

Next I am not sure exactly what you can change in terms of values. Such as, can you darken things like the cauldron in the foreground, since it would not be lit by the substance inside the cauldron?

Hope this helps, and gives you some ideas.
