Day 3 - Ultra short studies in Bad Nenndorf/Northern Germany. There is an avenue of special beech trees called "Süntelbuche" in german...looks totally awesome and there are very few around the world. Got you some pictures from the internet so you get a grasp of the place. We had the kids, so no resting...but nonetheless.

DAY 5 - Life drawing in the Park....man i totally botched the dimensions...need to plan beforehand the big masses, the middle one is a photo study of the same motif...notice how the lens does some slightly more convergence it seems...anyhow, great day, glad i could make it (on my way to work)

Learning points:
- Block in the whole thing BEFORE GOING IN, double check proportions and dimensions
- back light in the morning is gorgeous
- Stairs are a pita - straight edge probably recommended to get it right
- some indicated Background works really nice outlining the main subject
- dappled light is hard...didnt try to paint it - need to study this more
- my eye perspective is slightly less converging than my phone...need to observe this further.

Sooo...Stuff from 19.09 to yesterday....sunday was quite productive, took a walk with my materials and sketched random stuff in a nice little city in the middle of germany. Most is from life, the watercolor ones are from a workbook, so not my ideas, just trying to get into the medium...the dinosaur is a contructed doodle from a toy basicly.

I'd say. Such great work. Makes me want to go out and do pen and maker. I really love the different effects you got on the last image. Are you doing an under drawing or are you using marker form the start?

Great studies - really love that you are participating in my lonesome quest here...this fits the challenge absolutely, changed the headline to accomodate every traditional medium and as long as its from life. I think it's a great exercise not matter the medium - i find that the markers force you to decide on a tone before making the mark. I tend to go too timid in value with watercolor but it gets better.
As to the underdrawing: I do both. Sometimes i go right in with the marker or pen, sometimes i do a drawing with pencil or colored pencil first. I think doing a drawing first
for proportion is a good idea, getting spacings and proportions right form start can be tricky. See the bricks of the churchtower, they are totally uneven - i should have planned beforehand. Or the arch - it's way too short - i did commit to pen from the start...
Anyhow, plan on doing more plein-air soon, my new markerset is going to arive soonish!

Here are the watercolor sketches from my class this week. If it is not apparent the drooling thing is not from life.

So... i finished the task...i missed only once and it was a great journey and i think i will try to continue to draw from life as much as possible. It was very satisfying to see small perception gains and better understanding, very subtle, but it felt less awkward and i was less afraid of the blank canvas to start a sketch. Some of these are connected with Inktober in addition with daily spitpaint just to mix it up. So i would love ppl joining in here and going out there with there brushes and pencils and other utensils and trying to capture this amazing world.
